Houses for sale in Centro, Madrid

The Centro district is the most historic and oldest in the city of Madrid. This area encompasses six special neighborhoods: Palace, Ambassadors, Courts, Justice, University and Sol.

Without a doubt, the heart of Madrid has had a very specific place since the 15th century: Puerta del Sol. The most famous and representative square in the capital. It contains such important symbols for the people of Madrid as the traditional statue of the bear and the strawberry tree; the clock of the post office, from where the chimes of New Year's Eve are emitted every year; or, the sign of kilometer zero, where all the Spanish radial roads begin.

But if Puerta del Sol is the heart of Madrid, its artery and main axis is the Gran Vía. As if it were a Madrid Broadway, this street houses theaters, cinemas, large clothing stores and spectacular buildings, such as the Metropolis, the Capitol , the Telefónica Building or the Royal Oratory of Caballero de Gracia. In addition, in recent years the sidewalks of Gran Vía have been widened and car traffic has been reduced, giving pedestrians more space and comfort.

Plaza Mayor

The majestic Plaza Mayor, full of traditional cafes and restaurants, is the last monument in the Sol area before reaching the Palacio neighborhood, an area popularly known as Madrid de los Austrias. This neighborhood has the imposing Royal Palace, built in the 18th century, a building that has halls impregnated with art and antiques. This construction is located a stone's throw from the Sabatini Gardens, a green area open to the public, which is extremely well cared for and is known for the beautiful distribution of its flora.

Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena

Also in this neighborhood are the famous Cathedral of Santa María la Real de la Almudena, episcopal seat of Madrid, and the centenary Teatro Real, where classical dance and opera are staged. Belonging to the Embajadores neighborhood is another of the key monuments of this district, the Puerta de Toledo, in neoclassical style with stone arches and statues in honor of Fernando VII.

Culture

The neighborhoods of the Center also have popular markets, such as the well-known Mercado de San Miguel, a modern gastronomic space that offers exquisite products, or the popular Mercado de la Cebada, located opposite the Teatro La Latina. Some places that, together with the Rastro market and the lively Plaza del Dos de Mayo, make this area known for being very busy and for always enjoying a great atmosphere.

Likewise, this district stands out for hosting some of the most important cultural institutions in Madrid in its streets. Among them, the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum stands out, which houses works by such important painters as Gris, Dalí, Picasso and Miró; the Casa Encendida, with modern contemporary art exhibitions and workshops; the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, which has European masterpieces that reflect an artistic evolution from the Renaissance to Pop Art; the Museum of Romanticism; the Madrid History Museum; or the ABC Museum, of illustration and graphic art.

Even the very streets of this district exude culture, especially those that are concentrated in an area of the Cortes area, known as the Barrio de las Letras. The name of this place is due to the fact that it was there where some of the Spanish writers of the stature of Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Tirso de Molina or Góngora resided.
