Puente de Vizcaya

Also known as the “hanging bridge”, the Vizcaya Bridge is a toll transporter bridge and rises right where the Nervión connects with the sea. It was inaugurated in 1893 and the design was carried out by Alberto Palacio and Elissague, finally uniting the town of Portugalete with the neighborhood of Las Arenas (Getxo).

In 2006 UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site as it is considered one of the most outstanding constructions of the Industrial Revolution.

Casco Histórico

The historic center of Portugalete is basically made up of three main streets: Coscojales, Víctor Chávarri (which is better known as “the middle street”) and Santa María.

This intricacy of steep streets gives rise to the historic center that in 1996 was declared a Monumental Complex. In it, it is possible to discover different places of interest such as the Gothic-style Basilica of Santa María, the Plaza de la Ranchería or the Salazar Tower.

Culture

The municipality of Portugalete has all the benefits for day-to-day development such as supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, schools and institutes, medical centers, restaurants... And it also has the Santa Ana Cultural Center, the Municipal Library and even the Rialia Industry Museum, which shows historical and artistic exhibits.

Great importance is also given to music, and that is why the municipality has Coral Sorozábal; a group of fathers and mothers who usually perform at commemorative events.
